Dear friends,
It seems we are zooming through the year once again. Perhaps this is just what it feels like when you’re busy. The highlight music event for me so far this month was returning to WA last weekend to play at The Fairbridge Folk Festival in Pinjarra alongside beautiful musicians Liz Frencham on double bass, David Hyams on strings and Ziggi Diagne on talking drum and djembe. I was very inspired by all the wonderful music that I got to hear and just felt fortunate to be involved in such a great event. I’ve also been doing more work on the songs for the new album which I began recording while back in West Africa in February this year. Hopefully it will be ready for your listening pleasure by the end of of this one. In the meantime here is a link to another live clip I’ve just put up of the song Rythym and sound from the This Is the Story’ Album.
UPCOMING SHOWS
The next big gig I have in Sydney is THIS SATURDAY NIGHT 28th April at one of my favourite venues -Camelot Lounge in Marrickville. This place is run by the gregarious lead singer of Klezmer band Monsieur Camembert Yaron . Hallis. Aside from hosting a fantastic array of music, it’s complete with camel mobiles on the ceiling and is full of retro charm. I will be doing the gig alongside a stellar group of musicians – KATE ADAMS ON CELLO, LARA GOODRIDGE ON VIOLIN, NICOLA OSHER PLAYING PERCUSSION, ZOE HAUPTMANN ON FUNKY BASS AND SIBO BANGOURA ON DJEMBE.
The last time we played here it almost sold out so it really is best to book. You can do that here
Another gig Im really looking forward to is a solo gig on Sunday the 29th April at a new little venue in Marrickville called The Newsagency- This is a nice intimate space for a Sunday evening and is part of the Fabulous Femme series which is run by the wonderful singer songwriter Rosie Henshaw. She will be performing with her trio just before she heads off to tour Japan! The Newsagency is on at 6pm – 375 Enmore rd Marrickville $10 at the door BYO .

Next month I will be doing a few gigs singing with Sibo Bangoura’s powerhouse West African dance band Keyimba at The Gearins in the Blue Mountains and also at 505 in Surry Hills. Check out www.keyimba.com for more details.

That’s all from me for now so signing off from sunny Darwin town. Please keep me in your loop as I love getting mails from all of you,
All the best
Miriam

Dear friends,
I’ve just arrived back home to Sydney town after a very amazing three months overseas- 2 months back in (Guinea and Mali) going deeper into the learning of rhythms and traditional songs on kora, balaphone, vocal and guitar, reconnecting to some wonderful friends there and then getting the opportunity to record some of my songs with an amazing circle of musicians in Bamako… ( Hopefully that recording will be out and available by the end of the year).
This month has mainly been spent in Israel. I did a few gigs and one of my favorite ones was the one in a little bar in Telaviv called Tzuzamen. I played with Israeli percussionist Roni Parnass who has also spent lots of time in Africa. It was the first time we played together, but I felt as if we had been playing together for a long time and through her got to meet the muso scene of Telaviv and to live large with them. Certainly there was lots of synergy..
Aside from the gigs the highlights of my time there were camping next to bubbling hot springs at the shores of the dead sea, walking the tiny winding streets of mountain town Tsfat and those ancient streets of Jerusalem where it’s amazing how some of the most significant moments in Western and middle Eastern history are contained in just a few streets . I was also able to walk across the border into Jordan to visit the ancient Nabatean city of Petra , following a corridor of massive walled stone which opened into a valley of colossal monuments carved into stone thousands of years before. Jordan has such an epic desert landscape and ive seen nothing like the huge red sunsets. Though I may have visited all these ancient places the best thingof all for me were the living and breathing- the warm open and hospitable people that I met. Feel very thankful to have had such an incredible journey and now I hope to carry that spark with me back here in Australia.
So now I’m really looking forward to performing here again.
